Something Is Shifting and You’re Not the Only One Feeling It
What if the urgency isn’t fear?

Something has been building. Not loudly. Not with a clear announcement. It sits underneath everything. A restlessness, a push, an urgency you feel before you can explain it. The need to do more. Build more. Learn more. Stay ahead of something you can’t fully see yet.
Most people are feeling some version of this right now. Maybe not identically. Maybe not in the same arena or at the same intensity. But the feeling itself is everywhere. The sense that something is coming and you need to be ready, even if you can’t say for what. The most useful thing you can do with that feeling is trust your instincts before the picture is complete. I’ve been watching it show up consistently and feeling it in my own life, and I want to talk about it honestly.
Because here’s the problem. The moment most people describe this feeling out loud, someone immediately tells them what’s wrong with them.
The World Has a Name for Everything You Feel
We live in a culture that has decided every form of intensity is a problem waiting to be solved.
You feel driven to work more and someone calls you a workaholic. You feel urgency about building something and someone calls it scarcity mindset. You can’t slow the thinking down and suddenly you have ADHD. You want more, consistently and without apology, and the people around you start quietly suggesting you try meditation, work on your boundaries, slow down, be more present.
The label comes fast. The fix comes with it. And before you’ve had a chance to actually sit with what you’re feeling, you’re already being managed back into a more comfortable state for everyone else around you.
I’m not saying those things are never real. Some of that urgency genuinely does come from fear. But the labels themselves restrict you to a box that’s easy to fit into and a lot harder to crawl out of.
What the Labels Are Actually Saying
The labels aren’t neutral. They come loaded with a message that sounds like concern but functions like correction.
Workaholic says your investment in what you do is excessive and unhealthy. Scarcity mindset says your desire to grow comes from fear, not wisdom. ADHD says your inability to settle is a disorder that needs to be managed.
What every one of those labels has in common is that they position the feeling as wrong. As something to be corrected, reduced, or eliminated. And when you hear that often enough, from enough people, you start to wonder if they’re right. You start second-guessing the drive. You pull back from the urgency. You try to manufacture a calm you don’t actually feel because you’ve been told that’s what healthy looks like.
That’s the part worth questioning.
What It Costs You When You Accept the Label
When you take the label at face value and start trying to manage the feeling, something gets lost.
Not immediately. Not dramatically. It’s quieter than that. You start dismissing the nudge before you follow it. You talk yourself out of the urgency before you act on it. You convince yourself that if it were really important you’d feel it more calmly, more rationally, more like a reasonable adult making a reasonable decision and less like something is pressing on you from the inside.
And the thing that was trying to get your attention, the thing that was correct and timely and yours to act on, gets buried under a layer of self-management that was never supposed to be there.
You don’t always get to know what you missed. That’s the honest part. You just end up somewhere months or a year later, looking back at a window that has closed, wondering why you didn’t move when you felt the pull.
The pull was telling you something. You just learned not to listen.
Your Body Knows Something Your Brain Hasn’t Caught Up To Yet
This is the part most people struggle with, because we’ve been trained to require explanation before action.
Your body doesn’t work that way. Your instincts don’t work that way. The feeling arrives before the understanding does. That’s not a flaw in the process. That’s the whole point of having instincts at all.
When something in you says go, prepare, build, stay ahead, that signal does not come with a full briefing attached. It doesn’t come with a timeline or a rationale or a detailed explanation of exactly what you’re preparing for. It comes as a feeling. A pressure. An urgency you can sense but not yet articulate. And because you can’t verbalize it, the temptation is to dismiss it until you can.
That is contradictory to how our system is designed to work.
The Bear Doesn’t Question the Season
There’s a phenomenon that happens with bears before hibernation called hyperphagia. It’s the period where they start consuming extraordinary amounts of food, far beyond what they’d normally eat, in preparation for winter. They don’t know the exact date winter arrives. They haven’t checked a calendar. They feel a shift in the season and their body responds, and they trust it without needing to justify it to anyone.
Nobody looks at a bear in October and says it has an eating disorder.
The behavior makes complete sense in context. The context is the season.
You are not that different from the bear. You’re a creature with instincts that were built to pick up on incoming shifts and prepare before they arrive. The urgency to build, learn, grow, and stay ahead of something unnamed isn’t a character flaw. It’s your nature functioning exactly the way it was designed to function.
The question worth asking isn’t what’s wrong with you. It’s what season is coming.
How Instinct Actually Arrives
Instinct doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t come with a dramatic sign you can point to as proof or an undeniable confirmation that makes it easy to justify to anyone who questions it.
It arrives quietly. Persistently. As a feeling that keeps returning no matter how many times you try to explain it away. It feels familiar in a way that has nothing to do with your personal experience. It feels certain in a way you can’t back up with logic. It sits underneath the thinking, not inside it. You know it’s there not because you figured it out but because you keep coming back to it no matter how many times you try to move past it.
That is your instinct working. And it’s worth considerably more than the label someone placed on top of it.
Something Is Shifting and You’re Not the Only One Feeling It
I think this is a pivotal time. I think it’s more relevant now than it’s ever been, at least in my lifetime.
The world is changing at a pace most people’s frameworks can’t fully track. Technology is reshaping everything, not slowly, not over generations, but in real time in ways that are touching every corner of daily life simultaneously. The economy is shifting. The way information moves, the way industries are built and replaced, the way entire ways of working disappear and get rebuilt as something unrecognizable. All of it is in motion at the same time.
Most people can feel that something is different without being able to name exactly what it is or where it’s going. And the ones who are sensitive to it, the ones whose instincts are turned up, are feeling the pressure of that shift as a physical urgency. A need to build. A need to be ready. A need to stay ahead of something that hasn’t fully arrived yet but that they can already sense is coming.
That is not anxiety. That’s attunement. There’s a significant difference.
The World Is Moving Faster Than Your Framework
I’ve been feeling this myself. I genuinely love this work, and I invest a significant amount of time and energy into it, not from fear and not from compulsion, but because something in me keeps saying there is more to build and now is the time to build it.
That feeling isn’t entirely comfortable. It has an edge to it. A restlessness that sits just outside my usual calm. And the fact that I can’t fully name what’s coming doesn’t change the fact that something is.
What I know is that the feeling always reveals itself in time. You look back and you understand why you were driven to learn something specific or make a particular move or build a particular skill right when you did. The context arrives. It just doesn’t always show up on the front end where you could use it to explain yourself to everyone else before you moved.
Most people are in the front-end part of something right now. The part where the urgency is real and the explanation is still forming. That’s uncomfortable. It’s supposed to be.
You Don’t Have to Name It to Trust It
You do not have to have a full explanation before you honor what you feel. You don’t have to justify the drive to someone who hasn’t felt it. You don’t have to reduce the urgency to a comfortable size so it fits inside someone else’s definition of what healthy looks like.
In time it will become clear. It always does.
What you’re feeling right now, the push to build, to learn, to grow, to stay ahead of something you can’t quite see yet, that is not a character flaw. It’s not something to manage down or explain away or apologize for. Stay with it. Stay curious about it. Let it move you without demanding that it explain itself first.
The explanation is coming.
Move anyway.

It means honoring the feeling before you have the full explanation. Instinct arrives before understanding does. That’s how the system is designed. You don’t have to justify the push to act on it.
Cultural frameworks tend to label intensity as a problem. Drive becomes workaholism, urgency becomes scarcity mindset, restlessness becomes something to manage. Some of those labels are real. But they’re often applied without asking whether the feeling itself might be accurate information.
